Hearts of Midlothian has officially announced the signing of Ugandan international forward Rogers Mato, who becomes the fourth player from Uganda to join the club, following in the footsteps of legendary players David Obua, Tobby Sibbick, and Uche Ikpeazu Mubiru. Mato has signed on an initial loan deal until the end of the season, after which a permanent three-year contract will be triggered. He joins the club from FK Vardar in North Macedonia.

In an interview with the club’s media, Mato, who previously played for Proline FC and KCCA in Uganda, expressed his readiness to uplift the team to greater heights. “It is a great pleasure to be here at Hearts. I think it is my dream come true to be here. I am pleased to be here finally,” he remarked during his unveiling on Thursday. He will wear the number 74 shirt at the Scottish Premier League club.

Mato has been in outstanding form this season at FK Vardar, where he scored 15 goals in 17 games across all competitions. In the league, he found the back of the net 12 times and was the joint-top scorer alongside Bassirou Compaoré of Struga.

The young forward has experienced a significant upward trajectory in his career since being promoted from the Proline Junior Team. He went on to play for Proline FC and KCCA FC in Uganda before making a move to Turkey, where he played for Şanlıurfaspor. His journey continued with a stint at AP Brera in 2024 before transferring to FK Vardar.
